Maximum solar input capacity of the BCDC 25A

The BCDC 25A chargers (BCDC1225, BCDCN1225, BCDC1225D) fully utilise up to 375W solar panels, but larger panels can still improve charging in low-light conditions without harming the unit.

Chargers are designed for 12V recreational panels with a maximum VOC of 28V. Domestic/fixed panels are unsuitable.

Higher-capacity BCDC models and Manager30 can handle larger panels safely.

REDARC recommends seeking the support of a qualified auto electrician or technician.

What is the maximum solar input?

These 25A BCDC chargers can fully use solar panels up to 375W. Larger panels can still be used safely, they won’t harm the charger but may not be fully utilised during peak sunlight. However, bigger panels can still improve charging in lower-light conditions.

How does panel size affect charging?

For example:

  • A 375W panel in full sunlight might allow the 25A BCDC to deliver full charging current from 10AM–2PM*, adding up to 100Ah to your battery bank (plus lower charge rates outside these hours).

  • A 600W panel in the same setup could extend full charging from 9AM–3PM*, adding up to 150Ah (plus lower rates outside these hours).

Even though a 600W panel is bigger than the BCDC 25A can fully use, a 600W panel will still get more amp hours into your battery each day than a 375W panel.

NOTE: Times are illustrative only. Actual charging depends on latitude, panel angle, cloud cover, shading, panel quality/age, and other conditions.

What about panel voltage?

BCDC 25A chargers are designed for 12V nominal recreational/mobile panels, with a maximum VOC (open circuit voltage) of 28V.

Panels exceeding this voltage, such as domestic/fixed house panels (typically 44V+), are not suitable due to voltage and durability issues. Recreational panels are rugged enough for vehicle movement and off-road use.

Other REDARC products:

  • BCDC1240, BCDC1240D & BCDCN1240 – Fully uses up to 600W, unlimited maximum power.

  • Manager30 – Fully uses up to 450W, unlimited maximum power.
